FIRST stands For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. It was founded by Dean Kamen in 1992. The goal of FIRST is to inspire high school students to become interested in science and technology. Every year the FIRST organization comes up with a new challenge that teams all over the United States compete in. After the kick-off day, teams have six weeks or forty-two days to build, program and test a fully functional robot. The robot can be five feet ball and weight up to 150 pounds fully loaded. These robots are than paired with other teams and face off in a three vs three match.
FIRST encourages teams to be Gracious Professionalism. Teams share what they have learned and their experiences with other teams so that they too may learn. Teams can be awarded for their Gracious Professionalism by receiving the “Gracious Professionalism” award by the judges or by other teams.
